The risk of marine creatures coming to contact with plastic materials is not the same across the oceans. It largely depends on the biology of feeding and the quantity of plastic waste disposed of in the surroundings where these creatures seek nourishment from. For instance, the seabird species that often feed on the surface of the sea are more prone to ingestion of plastics than the diving species. The type of creatures that take in small micro-plastics, for example, a vast number of fishes and surface feeding seabirds, are usually at the highest risk in environments where there is a high concentration of microplastics. The species that ingest on larger plastic materials might potentially come across the material closer to the coasts where waterways such as rivers and other human activities spill and have a high accumulation of plastic waste. Research suggests that the risk of sea animals harmfully interacting with plastic pollution depends on the two factors which are; the biological species of the creature, and the abundance and distribution of the various plastic materials. This research gave reports on a study of sea vertebrates' interaction with plastic waste materials in the southeast Pacific. Given the various sources of transport of the floating plastic litter in the SE Pacific, the accumulation of micro-plastic components is relatively high in the areas close to the coast but rapidly decreases when moving far from the continental coast.
