Title: Gas Chromatography: Blood Alcohol Content Analysis: Determination of Ethanol Concentration in a blood sample. The purpose of this lab is to determine the concentration of ethanol in a sample of blood through gas chromatography. Materials Ethanol, N-propanol, Sodium Chloride, Bovine whole blood (unknown), 10% bleach, 24 GC vials and caps, 2 GC syringes, 15 100mL volumetric flasks, 50mL volumetric pipettes, 1mL volumetric pipettes, 100 μl fixed micropipette and tips. Safety Ethanol- Flammable, toxic, health hazard, irritant N-propanol- flammable liquid, serious eye damage, specific target organ toxicity, Bleach-Causes skin irritation, eye damage, toxic to aquatic life Biosafety for handling blood Treat all blood as potentially infectious. Gloves must be worn at all times when handling, all open cuts and abrasions should be covered. Make sure to use correct disposal methods.

Unformatted text preview: Procedure: Label a clean 250mL volumetric flask #1 and add 100mL of DI water and 2mL of ethanol using a volumetric pipette. Then fill to the mark with DI water, seal with parafilm and mix. Prepare a burette by rinsing with 20mL of DI water and the 10mL of stock solution and then fill with stock solution.
