Title : Spectrophotometric Determination of Iron in Mohr’s salt with o-Phenanthroline Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to prepare a set of standard solutions with a known exact amount of iron. All iron must be in the ferrous state to quantify the total amount by spectrophotometry. Materials: 50 mL of 0.005M -0.006M Mohr’s solution, 10 grams of Hydroxylamine hydrochloride ( Na 2 OH HCL ), 500 mL of o-phenanthroline solution, 83 grams of Sodium Acetate ( NaOAc 3 H 2 O ) in 500 mL of water, 3 grams of 99.9% Mohr’s salt ( FeSO 4 ( NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 6 H 2 O ¿ , 20mL of conc. Sulfuric acid, Ocean optics, Kimwipe, parafilm. Safety: - ( Na 2 OH HCL )- corrosive to metals, acute oral toxicity, skin corrosion, eye irritation - O-phenanthroline- toxic, environmentally damaging - Sodium Acetate-Not classified for physical or health hazards - Ammonium iron(II) sulfate hexahydrate- acute toxicity, skin and eye irritation - Sulfuric acid- health hazards, corrosive to metals, skin corrosion Procedure

Unformatted text preview: Dissolve unknown in 50mL of distilled water with 2mL of sulfuric acid and dilute to the mark Seal with parafilm and shake volumetric flask prepare all solutions 30 minutes before performing spectrophotometry Prepare the 6 solutuons volumetrically delivering volumes of stock solution to 100mL volumetric flasks using a burette Preparation of solutions will be listed below. Prepare the burette by rinsing with 10mL of distilled water and then 10mL of stock solution Calculate the exact iron concentration of each working standard Using a graduated cylinder, add 1mL of 10% hydroxylamine hydrochloride, 10mL of 0.02 M o-phenanthroline and 10mL of acetate buffer and dilute to line with distilled water and mix well Give TA a clean 100mL volumetric flask and she dispense 10mL of unknown solution In the graduated clyinder with 10mL of unnkown add 1ml of of 10% hydroxylamine hydrochloride , 10ml of 0.02 M o-phenanthroline and 10ml of acetate buffer.
