TRADE WAR WITH CHINA: THE SURVIVAL OF U.S. COMPANIES 2 Trade War with China: The Survival of U.S. Companies The current President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has promised in his presidential campaign to end China's unfair trade practices toward America. To keep his campaign promise, President Trump has decided to go on the offensive with the imposition or increase of tariffs on some imported Chinese goods (NYTimes, 2019). The Chinese government follows suit by imposing or increasing some tariffs on its American imports (NYTimes, 2019). President Trump warns world leaders that he will not tolerate China’s market distortions, cheating of American companies, victimization of American workers, and the plundering of American wealth (Trump demands changes, 2018). This paper shall elaborate on the reasons the idea that the United States should not continue to apply a policy of laissez-faire in its trading relationship with China. Trade War with China: the Survival of U.S. Companies The general problem to be addressed is the potential adverse effect of trade wars on the economic growth of nations. Linde & Pescatori (2019) denote that global trade could be neutral if the countries involved in the trade war would adopt a fully symmetric retaliation system. One cannot expect the enemy to play fair during a war; likely, the countries involved in a trade war will not use a fully symmetric retaliation. The specific problem to be addressed is the harmful effects of the current trade war between the United States of America and the Republic of China and the survival of U. S. companies. Stroup (2019) states that the imposition of tariffs on imported goods from the Republic of China will do more harm than good, as evidenced in the case of the solar photovoltaic panels where American companies were forced to scale back. The purpose of this qualitative study is to determine the course of action that would allow companies in the United States to survive the trade war. The economy of the United States and
