POLICY MEMO 1 To: Rensselaer’s Major From: Gina Giramonti Date: October 10, 2019 RE: Making a change with trash and recycling 2 Executive Summary A problem that needs to be addressed for our city is our trash pick-up and recycling. We go through so much trash that Newton County had to expand its landfill due to an overflow. If we don’t make a change then we will have to have our county landfill, damage our environment, and harm ourselves as well. Recycling is a better option and our community needs to take notice of it. Raising garbage stickers will decrease people wanting to buy them which will push them to have less trash. Less trash and more recycling could become a saying for our community. Problem Statement The United States produced around 228 million tons of waste in 2006 (The World’s Trash). That number has gone up over 254 tons by 2013 (The World’s Trash, 2016). We don’t see how much trash gets picked up each week because we don’t visually it go to the landfill. Then we don’t see what happens when it is at the landfill. Our trash can be very harmful to us, our environment, including pollution. The trash that lands in our landfills will pollute our air and the water (Garbage Problems). A typical trash bag takes over a thousand years to degrade (Garbage Problems)! We could compost our trash but instead, we aren’t, most of it can be. There are better ways to address and help in our community.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
