1 Julie Posner Organizing Tradition During the Civil Rights Movement During a time where African Americans were fighting for their freedom, the state of Mississippi kept its barricades up to preserve the brutal white supremacy within. In the book, I’ve Got the Light of Freedom by Charles M. Payne, focus is drawn on the organizing traditions and how they affected this movement to generate freedom among African Americans during the 1960’s. Organizing tradition is the collective non-violent efforts by a group of people towards change. Charles Payne conveys the argument that the Organizing Tradition focuses on leadership development as well as civic education in order to make the greatest impact on the Civil Rights Movement. Part of the foundational values of the organizing tradition was that everyone is a leader. According to Charles Payne, before the 1960s, southern Blacks have typically turned to an authoritarian way of leadership where one person takes charge and the rest follow. By the 1960’s, many activists were evolving into a philosophy of collective 1 leadership where everyone is a leader . Many African Americans were able to develop 2 their leadership skills at a school called Highlander.
