more likely leaving groups, which in the end facilitate the reaction. The alcohol which was used for this experiment was pinacolyl alcohol which is known an unsymmetrical alcohol. An elimination reaction occur for the acid catalyzed dehydration for Pinacolyl Alcohol to happen. Pinacolyl Alcohol (secondary alcohol) will produce an alkene through the pronation of the OH group, followed by the removal of water. The sulfuric acid was used because it is important as it is a strong acid which can protonate the OH group of the pinacolyl alcohol. Gas Chromatography (CG) was used to analyze the product. Simple diffusion was avoided because the product is volatile and its components have more similar boiling points and vapor pressure. Gas Chromatography demonstrated the amount of a substance which was present through the peaks along with retention time. Procedure Week 1: To begin this experiment, we set up for simple dilation by using a 100.0 mL round bottom flask as a reaction flask and a 50 mL round bottom flask as a collection flask.
