The Rosenhan study consisted of him sending eight pseudo patients into institutions to claim that they had heard voices. Rosenhan learned that it was easy to get into a mental institution but hard to get out. The eight participants acted normal after being admitted but no one noticed that they were fine for at least 19 days. After being released their status was paranoid schizophrenia in remission. Rosenhan found it odd that mental illness was viewed as an irreversible condition. The second study consisted of Rosenhan warning that he would send more fake patients into the facilities to be watching. He never sent any, but 41 out of 193 were classified as pseudo patients. 2. What are the “3 D’s” that define a psychological disorder? Identify and briefly explain each. Which of these do you think is the most important of these D’s and why? The three D’s are deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional. Deviant is thoughts and behavior that is different than the rest of cultural context. They all three deal with thoughts beliefs and behaviors. The most important is dysfunctional behavior and action because a person has to be able to function in order to live.
