Prisonization 2 Abstract Usually when someone gets incarcerated for a long time, they usually start to form a culture. Some join groups that are already formed in prisons throughout the nation. When this happens, this creates a culture that is different than the outside world of the prison system. At that point, these inmate turn to this culture and it becomes their normal way of life. 2

Prisonization 3 The term prisonization dates back to the mid 1930’s when a sociological study of inmates at Menard State Penitentiary by Donald Clemmer. Prisonization is the process of accepting the culture and social life of prison society. Prisonization usually occurs to help prisoners adjust to the pains of incarceration or imprisonment. This form of culture is usually caused by loss of freedom and adapting to being away from the general public. ( Prisons: Prisoners; Inmate Subcultures and Informal Organizations, 2019) Gresham M. Sykes argued that the hardships of confinement lead to this harsh subculture only found in prisons. There have been several studies that show this behavior due to this confinement away from the general public.
