Date: C. Late 19th century CE Subject Matter: Iconography- What do these figures represent or symbolize? Lamassu: The Lamassu symbolizes the king’s power. This tall broad figure is placed on either sides of the entrance of the citadel gates to act as angels/guardians that were assigned to protect the king. The Lamassu is combination of man, bull, and bird. The head is the only human element, ears are those of a bull, has a man's bearded face with very precisely modeled features, the body is very precisely carved to be is that of a bull. Adding on, the beast has five legs (not 4 legs), so that it looks as if standing still when seen from the front, and as if walking when seen from the side. It is visible that from the shoulders spring the wings of a bird of prey, but only one can be seen. From the front they appear to stand, and from the side, walk, and in earlier versions have five legs, as is apparent when viewed obliquely. Nkisi Nkond i : The Nkisi Nkondi represents a power figure. It’s a magical form seemingly carved in the likeness of a human. This figure signifies strength and importance. The Nkisi Nkondi contains many different types of insertions, including nails, pegs, and sticks that each have different meanings.
