Grace Lansberry Mr. Rapin AP Biology 25 October 2019 Climate Change’s Effect on the California Forest Fires In an article talking about the current California wildfires, the author describes the effects that climate change has on this current issue. In general California’s fires occur because of the dry, hot climate that happens during and after summer. The article’s author, Alejandra Borunda, describes how the major fires that have happened in the last few years “ have occurred in the fall, at the end of long, hot summers that sucked the wetness out of trees, shrubs, and other burnable material, but before the winter rains have kicked in” (Borunda). Additionally, California has naturally warmed 3.5 degrees fahrenheit since the 1800’s, as well as the fire season has lengthened by 75 days. In addition to the climate, winds increase during the fall and elevate the chance of forest fires, as they pick up existing flames and carry them far. Although fires have

Although the article addresses the climate change’s effect on forest fires, it only briefly addresses this issue and does not go into enough scientific detail. The article only discusses the overall concept and biological justification for the effects of climate change on forest fires. However the author is successful in describing the effects on the environment, as well as shortly its effect on society. The author was not successful in describing the effects on the economy and any potential applications of this knowledge. This knowledge could be used to help better understand climate change as well as the current forest fires that our raging on in California, and how we can further prevent these in the future and/or help them currently....
