Juvenile Justice History 3 In our long history of criminal justice, in recent history we as a nation here in America have established a separate justice system for juveniles. This new form of juvenile justice was brought to America from England around 1646 in which started in Massachusetts. This was the start of the five distinct stages of juvenile justice. These five stages of juvenile justice we will discuss are The Puritan Period, The Refuge Period, The Juvenile Court Period, The Juvenile Rights Period, and The Crime Control Period. Here we will define and explain each of the periods. ( Juvenile Justice Sixth Edition) The first of these five juvenile stages is The Puritan Period (1646-184). This was the first civilized justice system for children under age. In this period of justice, the family was in control of the children’s behaviors along with the Church and other social institutions that worked together within a community.
