U4-Ch 4 Nutrient Cycles in Marine Ecosystems The Nutrient Cycles Part 2
Image of page 1
OBJECTIVE S: Demonstrate an understanding that there is a reservoir of nutrients dissolved in the surface of the ocean Explain the processes by which the reservoir nutrients is replenished, including upwelling, runoff from the land and the dissolving of atmospheric gases Demonstrate an understanding that the reservoir of dissolved nutrients is depleted by uptake into organisms in food chains Summarize the N, C, Mg, Ca, & P cycles as simple diagrams Explain how productivity may be the availability of dissolved nutrients

Marine Nutrient Cycles: Review Nutrients enter the marine reservoir by atmospheric dissolution, run-off, or upwelling Nutrients are removed via uptake (consumption as food or for coral structures), by sinking (feces or dead organisms) to the seabed, or by harvesting (fishing) Each nutrient is needed for a different purpose and each cycle is different

The Carbon Cycle C is the basis of all organic material Chains of C molecules are found in carbs (sugars and starches); lipids; proteins; & nucleic acid (DNA) C enters the biotic phase through the fixation of CO 2 in photosynthesis & returns to its abiotic phase through respiration C enters the oceans mainly as dissolved CO 2 CO 2 reacts with the water to form carbonic acid (H 2 CO 3 ) H 2 CO 3 dissociates (separates into 2 substances) HCO 3 - & H +

Carbon Cycle – cont. Algae & Phytoplankton take in dissolved CO 2 and use it in photosynthesis to make organic compounds The C is fixed into glucose and used to form other compounds.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
