Meg Aki DSGN 100 - SEC B07 Fall 2019 w/ Carbia Ideas in Sight: Lecture by Nolan Beck Rivera Throughout this lecture, I learned a lot about ways to generate ideas, something that I’ve personally struggled with for a long time. Sometimes I have ideas but no motivation or means of acting on those ideas, but other times I’ll have the opposite: all the time, materials, and motivation but no ideas. With Nolan’s advice, I can now feel like those moments in which I lack ideas are no longer wasted. Nolan has four rules: 1) Make lots of things, 2) Open your eyes, 3) Capitalize on your luck, and 4) Design disciplines are dead. The first one I found to be fairly straightforward and typical of advice that artists receive. The second one was something that I’ve been trying to incorporate into my life lately. Trying to be more present is really important, especially today when people are so addicted to their phones. However, phones can also be useful tools in generating ideas and finding inspiration.
