Lab-Project 12: Cracking Windows Passwords with Cain and Abel What You Need A Windows machine with administrator access (real or virtual). Windows 7, 8, and 10 all work. If you want to use Windows Server 2008, you need to disable the "Password must meet complexity requirements" policy as explained here: - settings#1TC=windows-7 Cain & Abel will be detected as malware by your virus scanner. You will need to allow it to install, which is pretty easy if you use Microsoft Security Essentials. If you don't want to install it on your real machine, use a VM. Disabling Password Complexity If you are using Windows Server 2008, you need to disable Password complexity. If you are using a client version of Windows such as Windows 10 you do not need to do this. Click Start and type in secpol.msc When it finds the program, as shown below, press Enter . In Local Security Policy, in the left pane, click the + sign to expand " Account Policies ", as shown below.
