English 11 S1 - M2 L1 Close Read - Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 73” PURPOSE: You will analyze Shakespeare’s sonnets to identify the rhyme schemes, iambic pentameter, imagery, figurative language, and themes. DIRECTIONS: Using the Annotation Key below, analyze “Sonnet 73. Be sure to identify all components required, as well as annotate specific responses when required to do so. Annotation Guide 1. Identify the rhyme scheme by placing the appropriate letter (A-G) at the end of each line. 2. Mark each line’s iambic pentameter. Identify the unstressed syllables by bolding the stressed syllables. 3. Highlight each quatrain (in the Q-column) in a different color. 4. In numerical sequence, place a number (#) before each unknown words. Define those words in the Annotations column. Try to find 10! 5. Highlight words that relate to death or decay in this color. 6. Underline examples of imagery and summarize your analysis in the Annotations column.
