IMPACT OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION 2 Impact of Affirmative Action Affirmative action affects many individuals and organizations. It is a policy in which an individual’s color, race, sex, religion or national origin are taken into account to increase opportunities provided to an underrepresented part of society (Kenton, 2019). This term is used to identify policies and programs that aim to give equal opportunity in employment, education, and public contracting to minority groups. It supports those of a disadvantaged group that has suffered discrimination and was a component of the government’s acknowledgment of the resentment of African Americans toward their unethical and inequitable treatment. Affirmative action was converted in response to decades of discrimination against minorities and were first put in place in 1961. It was introduced by President John F. Kennedy, the President gave an executive order government contractors “take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or natural origin,” (Webster, 2017). Every federal government worker, including military personnel are directly impacted by laws of affirmative action. According to Walsh, affirmative action was defined as “those actions appropriate to help overcome the impact of the past and the present practices, policies, or other obstacles to equal opportunities in employment” (Walsh, 2019). Affirmative action policies have been adopted by many organizations and companies even though, there have been contrasting opinions throughout the years regarding implementation of affirmative action and its effects. It was developed into law March 6, 1991, securing equal possibility for every qualified person within the business environment. Throughout the years, affirmative action has reached a conspicuous opportunity of good yet as well as a tremendous deal of wrong (Rojas, 2012). Affirmative action has continued to be a

It is important because it help fight past discrimination, present day discrimination and promotes diversity in our society and there is a need for it.
