Samantha Minyard 10/20/19 Cupryk pd. 6 A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid focuses on an island that was previously under British Colonial Rule. The novel reveals problems with post-colonial identity through explicitly stating how British rule affected the residents’ religion, schooling, and money. One way their personal identities were affected is stated when Kincaid talks about religion. Even after the Island gained its independence, the people are still praying to the British God. Even though the British aren’t directly oppressing the people anymore, they still influence them and what they do. This is because they were a part of the Antiguans lives for so long. This change in religion was a large change in identity because before the British, the Antiguans were poly-theistic. The British Oppression changed the Antiguans lives, because they forced them to conform and practice their religion for so long, and when the British left it was still second nature.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
