JUSTINE WHALEN SEXUALITY FINAL: PROMPT 1: Discuss at least 3 events and/or people who have revolutionized the way Americans think about sex and sexuality. During the 20 th century sex was revolutionized in many ways throughout America and even in a few Latin American Countries. During the 1980’s and 90’s, there was a widespread AIDS epidemic across America. While it may have affected multiple areas across the United States, there was one state that was more affected than the others and that state was California. From the start, a picture was painted for AIDS and those who had/ got it. The majority of people who suffered from the disease were gay males, so a stigma was made. During this time homosexuality was already look down upon and people who were a part of the LGBT community were judged and discriminated against because of their sexuality. When the epidemic broke out and people were made aware that those being affected were gay males, it was more proof that gay sex was wrong and sinful because they were being punished by getting AIDS. In addition, it also increases the negative thoughts and feelings towards the community because people saw that as contaminated and diseased. Some men who had not yet come out about their sexuality were also outted during this time because they got AIDS which others assumed meant that they had taken part in homosexual activities. During class we watched a documentary about the AIDS epidemic and during the film there were several people who were affected by AIDS either personally or they have had friends/family members that have been affected by it. In the film is showed how many people died from AIDS and how bad/painful the symptoms were. The AIDS epidemic helped to revolutionize the way people thought about sex

JUSTINE WHALEN because it increased awareness for safe sex as well as helped spread awareness that diseases such as AIDS can be easily transmitted. In the 1950’s to the 1990’s a man, William H Masters, and a woman, Virginia E Johnson conducted several studies to research the sexual response of humans. In class we watched the trailer for a tv show called “Masters of Sex”. This show was about the lives of Masters and Johnson, more specifically the research they did together. These two scientists were a very key part of revolutionizing the way Americans think about sex. William Masters paid prostitutes who volunteered to be a part of their study. Masters and Johnson had the volunteers engage in sexual activities while having wires and monitors attached to them to measure their vitals while Masters and Johnson themselves observed the volunteers. Eventually they too joined their own study and engaged in sexual activities to add to the data they were collecting. In the show, it expressed how revolutionary their work was because sex was kind of a taboo topic at this time so for someone to openly do scientific research to find out more about it was simply unheard of.
