Definition: Gestational diabetes is diabetes mellitus that occurs during pregnancy due to the placenta producing high levels of various hormones that “impair the action of insulin within the cells which causes blood sugar to rise” (Mayo Clinic, 2018). Patho: In diabetes mellitus (DM) glucose does not get absorbed by the cells and stays in the blood stream. According to The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) (2017), the “body produces a hormone called insulin that keeps blood sugar levels in the normal range”. Insulin is produced and secreted by the pancreas (Lewis, 2017). “During pregnancy, higher levels of pregnancy hormones can interfere with insulin, causing the body to not be able to make enough leading to gestational diabetes (GDM)” (ACOG, 2017).
