OBJECTIVE 1) To prepare the KBr pellet of and organic compound ( such as benzoic acid) 2) To carry out a qualitative analysis of an organic compound (such as benzoic acid) using FTIR 3) To identify IR absorption peaks and the corresponding functional groups of an unknown solid/ liquid / powder APPARATUS 1) Die set 2) Hydraulic press gauge 3) Agate mortar 4) Pestle 5) Spatula 6) Pellet holder 7) Beaker CHEMICAL 1) Potassium bromide iodide, KBr (IR grade) 2) Benzoic acid 3) Unknown ( solid / liquid / powder) PROCEDURE A) SAMPLE PREPARATION OF IR ANALYSIS I. The KBr method 1. The solid sample was obtained (i.e. benzoic acid) and the KBr solid (IR grade) from the desiccator. 1 gram of each was weighed and dried in the oven for about 2-3 hours at 110°C. 2. The agate mortar and pestle was removed from the desiccator for used to grind the benzoic acid and KBr. 3. 1 mg of benzoic acid was take out and was grinded by using agate mortar and pestle until the benzoic acid become very small and shiny. (grind for about 1 minute or more). 4. 80 mg of KBr was taken out and was grinded it using agate mortar and pestle until it becomes powdered. 5. The benzoic acid and powdered KBr was mixed in agate mortar for ration 1:80 and was grinded the mixture until become homogenous (about 30 seconds). 6. By using a spatula, the mixture was scraped into the middle and was grinded the mixture again for about 15 seconds to mix the benzoic acid thoroughly with the KBr.

7. The benzoic acid and KBr must be finely grounded, or the mixture will scatter the infrared radiation excessively. 8. The mixture was heaped in the center of the agate mortar using a spatula. II. Making the KBr pellet 1. The die set was removed from the box or storage container. 2. Die set was cleaned with ethanol 3. The mixture of benzoic acid and KBr was put into the die set. 4. The die set was closed tightly and was put it into hydraulic pressure gauge. The hydraulic pressure gauge was tightened. 5. The hydraulic pressure gauge was pressed until the pressure goes up to 7000 psi.
