Female Reproductive System Vocabulary Ovaries: primary female reproductive organs that produce ova, estrogen, and progesterone Ovarian follicles: tiny saclike structures in the ovaries; each follicle consists of one immature egg Oocyte: immature egg located in the follicles of the ovaries Graafian follicle: mature egg that is ready to be ejected from the ovary Ovulation: event in which a mature egg is ejected from the ovary; normally occurs every 28 days Fallopian tubes: receive the ovulated oocyte and provide a site where fertilization can occur; about 10 cm long and extend from the ovaries to the superior region of the uterus; little to no actual contact between the ovaries and fallopian tubes Fimbriae: finger-like projections that partially surround the ovaries; once an oocyte has been expelled, the fimbriae create wave-like currents that guide the oocyte into the Fallopian tubes
