Justine Whalen 1-22-19 Course Intro Assignment Based on numbers in 2015, one of the leading causes of death in America is respiratory disease. This can be caused many factors ranging from environmental, to cultural, to gender, etc. There are two health disparities that can be considered as contributors to respiratory disease and they are geographic location and age. Depending on where a person lives, there are certain environmental factors that can affect the health of that person. For example, if a person lives close to factories or buildings that emit a lot of harmful gases, smoke, and fossil fumes, that person is breathing in those toxic fumes and gases for a large part of the day which is damaging their lungs. In addition, other geographical locations that could contribute to the onset of respiratory disease include larger cities that have a lot of motorized vehicles that emit toxic fumes into the environment. Aside from geographic location, age is another contributing factor to the development of respiratory disease. According to my source “age-related changes in the lungs include… decline in the effectiveness of lung defense mechanisms” (Lechtzin,2017) and also, “age-related changes in the lungs compound the effects of heart and lung diseases the person may have” (Lechtzin,2017).
