Bush 1 Jerald Bush Mrs. Bakle Honors English 10 5 September 2018 Lord of the Flies Essay “Every sweet has its sour; every evil is good.” This quote was said by the great transcendentalist writer, Ralph Waldo Emerson. The quote tells that everyone has a good side and a bad side to them. This quote applies in many ways to Lord of the Flies. William Golding uses Lord of the Flies to portray that people degrade others to improve their own situation. In Lord of the Flies , there are many instances of bullying for power throughout the novel. On page 62, Roger is throwing rocks at Henry for no reason. Henry has done nothing to Roger, but Roger feels the need to kick over sand castles, mess up rock patterns, and stomp on flowers. He was abusing his power, which comes from being older and from Jack, to torture and hurt little kids physically and emotionally. He wants to gain fear in their hearts and mind which will make him more powerful. The more power he has, the more he is respected. He wants to improve his situation by bringing down and hurting others.
