Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Scholastic 1998) Learning Objectives Students will be able to Identify different modes and genres of children’s literature Analyze themes across children’s texts Research, apply, and document academic sources Compose a thesis-driven essay on children’s literature Assignments Research Essay (four to five pages, not including bibliography) Annotated bibliography Four critical responses (300 words each) Grade Breakdown Research Essay = 300 pts. Annotated Bibliography = 100 pts. Critical Responses = 200 pts. Midterm = 100 pts. Final = 100 pts. Participation = 200 pts. Quizzes/Participation There is no attendance policy for this course. But there will be daily discussions and short quizzes based on the reading. If you keep up with the reading, they will not be difficult. Do not expect to do well on quizzes (or the class in general) if you choose to rely on online summaries. Absences will be excused only with a valid doctor’s note. Research Essay Description

For this assignment, students will composes a thesis-driven essay that uses research to support an argument. The genre of this assignment is academic, meaning that it will be modeled on examples published by scholars in peer- reviewed journals. Students should be writing to a scholarly audience that is interested in and familiar with the texts. To support the essay’s claims, students will research their topic, becoming familiar with the critical discussion surrounding it, and then incorporate other claims into the essay. The purpose of the assignment is for students to demonstrate that they 1) understand the structure and the tone of academic essays; 2) can develop a thesis statement; 3) can support their claims with relevant secondary sources; 4) engage with both literature and literary theory.
