Negatives from Raising Disabled Children 2 Abstract Parents who have a child with a disability face a variety of challenges. There is a major difference between raising a child with disabilities versus a child with no disabilities. The first and constant concern of a parent whose child is disabled is the need for information. When someone deals with something they have never experienced before, their first instinct is to learn about the problem. After spending countless time researching the needs for their child, the amount of time they devote to the child becomes an even bigger commitment. Depending on the disability, the child may need constant care at all times. Another challenge they face comes from the amount of money it takes to raise a child. Finances are already challenging for most when raising a child with no disability, and they can be an even bigger issue with a child that has a disability. It can cost up to 1.4 million dollars over their life to raise a child with ASD. ASD is autism spectrum disorder which is affects 1 in 59 children in the United states today. These financial struggles can produce an even bigger problem: psychological stressors. These stressors usually come from money and lack of time for oneself. Stress can truly change the way a person functions and mental health is a large concern for these parents. While many challenges come from raising a disabled child, the main difficulties arise from time issues, financial burdens, and psychological stress.

Managing time can be difficult and very hard to balance. These parents spend most of their time finding out information to help their child, at doctors’ appointments, and simply taking care of their child. It can be a major challenge to devote time to yourself and your significant other. Time is easily lost every day because one is giving all of their time and attention to their child. Raising a child with a disability is no easy task. Many financial burdens come from the time and treatment devoted to disabled children. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. This disability can cause high amounts of medical bills due to treatment needed. These financial issues cause extreme amounts of stress. Parents who raise disabled children usually end up with psychological issues such as depression and countless days without experiencing well-being due to financial burdens and other issues. Well-being is something everyone wants in life, but when raising a child with a disability this can be a setback to reaching that state of mind.
