Autism and ADHD Worksheet Relate the symptoms of autism and ADHD to neurotransmitter and/or structural abnormalities in the brain. AUTISM 1) Communication Problems a. Neurotransmitters: Increased level of serotonin is commonly seen in patients with autism, but SSRIs prescribed to patients with autism sometimes show positive effects regarding communication problems (Quaak, Brouns, & Van de Bor, 2013). This is conflicting, but these findings have led to interest in the part that exposure to SSRIs in utero play on the development of autism (Quaak et al., 2013). b. Brain Structures: The parts of the brain associated with communication are the same as the parts associated with the social interaction parts of the brain. This part of the brain is referred to as “the social brain” and included middle temporal gyrus, the amygdala, and several other parts; abnormal activities may take place in these areas and may play a part in autism (Ha et al., 2015). 2) Social Interaction Difficulties a. Neurotransmitters: The dopaminergic system has been linked to social behavior and abnormalities in this system are observed in patients with autism (Quaak et al., 2013). b. Brain Structures: Increased dopamine transporter levels found in the orbitofrontal cortex may play a part in autism development (Quaak et al., 2013). The parts of the brain that are associated with social interaction problems are the “social brain” which include the middle temporal gyrus, the amygdala, and several other parts; abnormal activities may take place in these areas and may play a part in autism (Ha et al., 2015).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
