Dementia and Fall Risks Dementia Dementia is defined as “a neurocognitive disorder characterized by dysfunction or loss of memory, orientation, attention, language, judgment, and reasoning” (Lewis, Bucher, Heitkemper, Harding, 2017). Sixty to eighty percent of dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) (Lewis et al., 2017). The characteristic findings of AD are caused by the changes in the brain’s structure and function: “(1) amyloid plaques, (2) neurofibrillary tangles, (3) loss of connections between neurons, and (4) neuron death” (Lewis et al., 2017). These characteristics cause damage to the brain and it for it to not function properly. Fall Risks According to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba (2014), the following changes that occur could result in the increase of falls in people with dementia: Insight- it affects judgment and the ability to reason Recognition of sensory input (sight, sound, touch) Communication- ability to express needs

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
