INTERVIEW AND INTERDISCIPLINARY ISSUE IDENTIFICATION 2 Interview Summary I work as a circulating nurse in neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic’s St. Mary’s Hospital Campus in Rochester, Minnesota. For my interview I spoke with another circulating nurse. As circulating nurses we ensure patient safety during the procedure, maintain a sterile field, assist with opening supplies to the sterile surgical technician, answer pages the surgeons receive, answer and make phone calls, and get medication from the pyxis for the CRNAs and the surgeons. We also document drains and Foley catheters, pre- and post-op skin assessments, pain assessment, medications used during the procedure by the surgeons and residents, position the patient is in during the procedure, what the skin was prepped with before the procedure, specimens being sent to pathology, place radiology and medication orders, all equipment used, counts of sponges, sutures, and instruments. There is also post-operative educating to be done with some cases. While I was interviewing the other RN, I asked what were some issues he had come across recently that could be fixed with an interdisciplinary approach and he had the perfect example.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
