Justine Whalen Ms. Thieken 5-29-19The Nervous System The body system that I was given is called the nervous system. The nervous system consists of two main sub-systems known as the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system, which is the part of the nervous system I will focus on the most, is made up of the brain and the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system is made up of “nerves and small concentrations of grey matter called ganglia (1)”. When the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system work together, they receive messages and sensory information from different parts of your body and then responds to the information by sending messages back through your body by the use of neurons so that it can respond appropriately. More specifically, messages from the senses and muscles in a person’s body are sent to the spinal cord where new messages are sent from there to the rest of the body to cause movements/reactions. Since the nervous system is made up of brain, nerves, spinal cord, etc. that means that it controls the senses/responses to senses, movements and memory/thought. Like any other body system, the nervous system malfunction leaving a person with a certain related disease. There are many popular diseases associated with the nervous system, the three that I chose to focus on were Alzheimer’s disease, Neurofibromatosis, and Cerebral Palsy. Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects the brain by causing the neurons in the brain to die which in turn affects the sending and receiving of messages. The result of these neurons being

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
