Psychiatric Diagnosis: Depression Definition of Primary Psychiatric Diagnosis: (3 components) definition/description of diagnosis, symptoms. Major depressive disorder: a mental health disorder characterized by persistently depressed mood, loss of interest in activities, and decreased social functioning and/or reasoning, causing significant impairment in daily life. A person with MDD has a history of a depressive episodes with no history of manic or hypomanic episodes. The DSM-5 diagnostic criteria includes: depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day (subjective report); diminished pleasure in all or almost all activities; significant weight loss without trying (5% body weight change in one month); insomnia; fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day. Symptoms are used as the diagnostic criteria. They include insomnia, fatigue most days, loss of interest/pleasure in activities that used to be fun/pleasurable, feelings of worthlessness (subjective), loss of ability to think or concentrate, and recurrent thoughts of death/suicidal ideation. Explanation of Disease Pr ocess (Changes in Structure and Function –Cite what is going on in th e bra i n; the pathophysiology r e lated to this: There are many factors that play into MDD, such as genetics, environment, and co-occurring diagnoses such as anxiety. In MDD, the two major neurotransmitters thought to be affected are serotonin and norepinephrine. Dopamine may also play a role in depressive episodes. One theory is that there are a decreased number of these neurotransmitter receptors in the brain, leading to inability to elevate mood properly. Another theory postulates that there is an overall lack of the

neurotransmitters in the brain, so while the receptor sites may be functioning, there is not enough serotonin/norepinephrine/dopamine to bind to them. This is why drugs such as SSRIs and SNRIs
