PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS 2 Performance Management Systems A performance appraisal is a method in which the working performance of an employee has been documented and evaluated. It is a driving force of career development and provides employee reviews within organizations. They are used by organizations to evaluate the employee's performance, provide feedback, and helps to develop an action plan based on company goals. It also allows the employer to maintain records that can be used to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the employee. It’s a guide for employers, to establish and track the performance an employee has attained as well as the type of compensation/advancement they should receive. It has a significant impact on how appraisals are managed and how they can be used to help understand the abilities of an employee to further grow and develop providing information pertaining specifically to how the employee has maintained or went above and beyond in order to achieve company goals. It is an ongoing process of evaluating employee performance and should be accurately measured so employees will know where they can improve. Performance appraisals are important because they provide a stronger view of employees that are good candidates for promotion and how well they fit into their current operating environment. While providing an open line of communication between leadership and employees, they also give the employer the opportunity to acknowledge, enhance the goals of the employee and encourage growth and opportunity within the organization. Overall, it provides the employee with the information of where they stand within the company (Grote, 2009). There are benefits to performance appraisal, and if utilized properly it leads to employees feeling appreciated, it boosts morale while motivating employees to make an effort to accomplish higher ratings on their next review as well as positively benefiting the company.
