Response #2 In most children's literature there are a lot of common themes, however the one I feel that makes the biggest impact on the reader, the child specifically, is the theme of ‘temptation’. Temptation has been recurring, and comes in many forms and metaphorical situations. This is even more prevalent in the stories that we read in this class because of the time period, where biblical references or inspiration is almost always included. In the Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti, it is abundantly clear that she is trying to portray what is and what happens when temptation is introduced. The Bible as well, the creation of original temptation to man. Most of the stories however show us that little girls are the ones that want and want and want all that they see that catches their eyes however in studies done they found that girls were shown to be more resilient to temptation than their male counterparts (Silvermen 219). This directly contradicts both the Bible and Rossetti’s texts in which they paint the picture that girls

Temptation has been the root of all sin, and in the Bible temptation is caused by the devil himself. In Rossetti’s poem, she included many of the Seven Deadly Sins within all the temptation, like gluttony, greed, and lust. She also makes a jab at women that sell their body to goblin men in order to get what they desire. Silverman also made reference to the Oedipus Complex, being that young children hold sexual desire to their opposite sex parent and with that we could deduce that in Rossetti’s poem she also refers to a possible incest relationship between young sisters.
