ACIS Notes: Chapters 2 and 3 Information systems are made up of five basic components: o Hardware o Software o Data o Procedures o People Hardware: Physical components that do much of the work. Includes items like the mouse, monitor, CPU, and hard drive. Software: The instructions that tell the hardware what to do. Also called programs or applications. Data: The facts and figures that are processed into information. People: Human components that do the work the hardware cannot. Procedures are the instructions that tell the people what to do. Example: iPod: The case, touchscreen and the earbuds=hardware

o iTunes and the operating system=software o Music=data o Myself as well as the Apple developers=people o Touches and swipes you use to make selections=procedures Methodology: Simply a standard process. The Systems Development Lifecycle (SDLC) is a common methodology that can help a team to implement a successful new information system or improve an existing IS.
