Running head: MY SERVICE LEARNING EXPERIENCE Ashley Heck My Service Learning Experience My service learning experience was so much better than last semester. For NURS 2700 I sat in the food cupboard at North Hennepin Community College and did homework. This semester, I went to Tradition in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and hung out with some pretty friendly and awesome people. There are people with illnesses that live there, but I am unsure of what types of illnesses and chronic disabilities that they have. I talked to Christine, the activities coordinator, she didn’t know either, and I was not comfortable asking the residents since I didn’t have a relationship with them. What Tradition Is Tradition is a both an assisted living and independent living home for seniors. They provide many different fun activities for the residents to participate in. They also have a little restaurant on the second floor that residents and their visitors are able to dine at. Each resident has continental breakfast and ten meals included in their rent. Tradition is also hosting a Thanksgiving dinner and a holiday gala. The gala is really cool and even includes horse drawn carriage rides! I spent some of my down time chatting with some residents and they seem to enjoy it at Tradition and are happy to call it their home. I also did some research and Tradition has great reviews online. Everyone seemed to be happy, including the staff. The staff members that I saw were very bubbly and knew everyone by name. You can tell that they truly love their jobs. What I Did to Help During my ten hours there, I put up fliers, helped with the social hour, collected money for bingo, hid paper turkeys for the turkey hunt on the following day, completed a welcome questionnaire with a resident, and assisted another resident with cleaning her

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
