Unit 2 Discussion Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox or have had exposure, you are at risk of getting shingles. Shingles can lie dormant for years. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 3 people in the United States develop shingles in their lifetime. Shingles is most common after the age of 50 years , but it can appear at any age if a person has previously had chickenpox. I can agree to that fact, as I am only 38 years old and get shingles due to having chickenpox at the age 3. Shingles can occur anywhere on your body; it most often appears as a single stripe of blisters that affects one side of the body. It often affects the waist, chest, abdomen, or back. Symptom can also appear on the face and the eyes, mouth, and ears. The virus can also affect some internal organs. Early symptoms of shingles may include fever and general weakness. You may also feel areas of pain, burning, or a tingling sensation.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
