Models of Heath and Healing There are several different models of health that can be looked in to, two of these models are the Western model and Eastern model. These two models of health are extremely different but when combined they can yield amazing results in patient outcomes. Treatment within the Western model relies on evidence found through trial and error, research, and the scientific method. Western medicine is also referred to as conventional medicine it is the most used the majority of US citizens. The focus of Western medicine is in diagnostics and how to stop the progression of diseases through a deductive focus where Eastern medicine uses an inductive focus (Tsuei, 1978). A deductive approach is based off of the scientific method, it starts from a hypothesis. New ideas are theorized and put through multiple trials until one particular practice creates the best result. Western medicine is where we derive evidenced based practices, through trial and error to create the best possible outcome. An inductive approach is focused on losing at already assisting data and attempting to find a new perspective on how something works (Gabriel, 2013). Western medicine takes the approach of fixing the physical, chemical, or environmental problem that is causing the illness, and treats health and disease as two distinct units that are not connected. Eastern medicine approaches disease by looking at health and disease as two distinct units that are connected, and when these are out of balance we must look to rebalance them. Eastern medicine aims to help adapt the body to the environment rather than change the environment to alleviate disease. The easiest way to conceptualize the approach of Eastern medicine is to look at the yin and yang symbol In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the yin and yang to illustrate the balance within a being and the relationship it shares with the environment. Western medicine looks at every aspect of a person and from their chemical

makeup, microbiology, and attempts to change things on a cellular level through medications, surgery, and radiology. Eastern medicine looks to strengthen a person’s addictiveness through using nontraditional modalities such as herbs, relaxation techniques, energy work, and acupuncture to restore balance within a being. Once balance achieved illness will be alleviated. Western medicine may use modalities such as antibiotics to cure infections by working on the cellular level of disrupt the life cycle of the microbe causing the infection. Western medicine also uses artificial limbs or organs to help elevate symptoms of disease processes and disabilities. In Western medicine chemicals such as conventional medications help treat disease through chemically altering the body (Tsuei, 1978).
