2 EFFECTS OF MORTALITY SALIENCE ON FEAR OF DEATH AND MEMORY Abstract Mortality salience or one’s mindfulness of the inescapability of personal death forms a sense of anxiety that initiates a defense mechanism for the regulation of thinking that influences different psychological processes and human activities. Terror Management Theory emphasizes that the danger of death generates existential terror, which draw attention to the necessity for security. This study aims to measure the fear of death- or anxiety- in response to conscious and non-conscious contemplations of death by controlling the valence- decisive against negative- and content- death against non-death- of a narrative read by the subjects. The researcher will measure the possible changes reported by participants concerning the fear of death before and following their reading of given stories. The participants will also write their initial understanding of death after making their second fear- of-death ranking. Then, the participants will complete the fear-of-death questionnaire for the third time. Finally, participants will complete a recognition test, to measure their memory for the story read at the beginning of the study. The examination will assess mortality salience influences one's consciousness. The research will be done with a volunteer of 120 college students who will go through all the phases of the investigation. The collected data will be analyzed through a two-way ANOVA. The practical applications and implications of the findings for college students and the entire community will be discussed. Keywords : Fear, memory, mortality salience, death, terror management.
