Motivation Theory Description Example of Appropriate Situation to Use Pros Cons Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory A five-tier system of human needs for motivation. All needs on the lower portion of the pyramid must be completed before moving up to the top tiers. Lower tiers include basic human needs such as food, water, and security. Top tiers include self-esteem and self- actualization. This can be used when someone is first starting out in their career. As a manager, this can ensure the employee that through their compensation and benefits, their basic needs can be met. From there, a manager can create a sense of job security and provide promotions and training to help the employee move up the company ladder. Very easy to understand and can be used in any field. Does not work on everyone. Some people are more motivated by their social status than their basic needs. It is also hard to measure what each person defines as their basic needs. Douglas McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y Theory X is the authoritarian style of management.
