Foundations of Mythology Myths are stories that can come from families to be shared with each generation or even from cultures to tell of their creation. The word myth is used when referring to stories about mythology. These stories are about many different deities, Gods, and Goddesses. According to Mythology (2002) “Myths are the stories that define a culture. They tell of the creation or beginning of the world; of deities and their relations with humans; and of the values, heroes, and histories of a group or society” (p. 116). A myth is a story that is claimed to be true. These could be stories passed down from generations. Menzies (2013) states, “Myth brings significance and meaning to life as much as life brings meaning to myth” (p. 6). In an academic context myth is used to describe or refer to different stories or cultures in various parts of the world.
