Module 04a Perception I Goals and Objectives Lecture Notes: Unit 04a Perception I At the completion of this unit, you should be able to define and use the following terms: Algorithm : fixed procedures for performing a computation that always give the same result Bottom-up processing : info that arises from the stimulus itself, from the external world Direct perception : stimulus is very rich, it has all the information we need to verdically perceive the world; bottom-up processing; Gibson argues we can find all kinds of cues to the actual state of affairs in the real world in actual retinal image, no need for unconscious inference Gestalt Principles : prägnanz, similarity, good continuation, proximity, familiarity, common fate, common region, element connectedness, synchrony; Gestalt was interested in understanding perceptual organization and as a result produced these lasting contributions Heuristics : rules of thumb, applies better to perceptual organization because they do not always result in the correct perceptual organization Perceptual organization : the need to organize the different objects to piece together what the visual is, parse the parts of the picture to figure out what the whole thing is - Determining what pieces and fragments of the retinal image
