1ReyesExperiment 4: Solid Liquid Extractions and Sublimation of Caffeine In this experiment, the main goal was to isolate caffeine from tea leaves through solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extraction. Finally using the sublimation technique to further purify the caffeine product. After having collected the caffeine from the tea bags, in which one tea bag contains 55 mg or 0.055g of caffeine. Continued to further the procedure through extraction to obtain both crude and pure products, would then one be able to calculate how much extracted product was obtained from the expected amount of 0.11 g of caffeine. From the crude product, only 0.031g ofcaffeine was extracted while for the pure product it was 0.0201g. To obtain crude product, caffeine had to be extracted from the tea bags, boiled the solution with the caffeine for 10 minutes with NaCl and Ca(OH)2, filter the solution and finally extract any remaining crystals with dichloromethane. By adding NaCl into the solution with water and caffeine, helped to “salt-out” water from the caffeine solution. Because NaCl is very polar it was able to attract water in order to separate water from caffeine. Ca (OH)2had an opposite interaction from NaCl. Ca(OH)2 makes the solution basic, making caffeine less polar

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
