Week One Journal Entries The Reconstruction of the South after the Civil War is one of the events that piqued my interest this week. I do not remember going very in depth with these events during my time in High School and learned so much about the history of this Nation. There was so much that took place during this time that changed the future of the United States. While some say that the reconstruction of the South was a failure, there were many things that came from it that was a step in the right direction. The addition of the 13 th , 14 th , and 15 th amendments were ratified after the Civil War which ended slavery, gave equal protections to all citizens, and gave black men the right to vote. These are some of the good things to come from reconstruction, but even with these efforts, life in the South was not what the once slaves had hoped for. The Freedmen’s Bureau was created before Lincoln’s death with the purpose to help make the transition from slavery to freedom easier on the newly freed people. There were many Southerners who disagreed with the work of the Freedman’s Bureau. Even President Johnson disagreed with extending it bureau’s work, stating that reconstruction was already completed. This was something that came as a shock to me. How could this Nation’s leader be so blind to think that reconstruction was complete, and all was well in the South. That was not the case at all. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
