Hernandez 1 Geovanni Fuentes Hernandez Professor Alfonsi English 208 20 November 2019 Fun Home Alison Bechdel's Fun Home is a real-life story that challenges gender roles and social norms. The theme of fiction versus reality is shown throughout the whole memoir when the actions of the characters challenge the norms constructed by society. This gender role ideology derived from our ancestors who made it obvious that in society women were gatherers and men were hunters. This has changed throughout time, women are now more independent and able to express themselves more than before. On top of this, they also have more opportunities of being successful. Even Though there's been change these norms still exist. The idea that men have to be prepared to be the breadwinners and that women have to be prepared to become mothers has not changed. Parents completely disregard their child's sexual preferences. Even Though both genders shared the same space and breathed the same air, the female gender is still seen and treated differently. In Bechdel's graphic novel she explores and deconstructs the significance of being heterosexual. In their effects to understand their sexuality, Bruce and Alison explore gender roles. Bechdel defies cultural expectations by identifying herself as a queer, on top of this she acts in a way that signifies she’s different. She strongly defies gender roles because women are expected to act and dress one way while men act and dress differently. These are the ways each

For example on the third panel the father states “ I don't care! Next time, I see you without it, I'll wake you.” (Bechdel 97) This argument all started because she removed a barrette from her hair. Another example of her dad

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
