1 Young Gabrielle Young English 2363 Professor Snider November 26, 2018 Identities and the pictures they paint “America, the great.” For centuries, America has been the ideal destination for dreams to be achieved, wealth to prosper and family roots to be enriched by the soil. Immigration to America can be traced all the way back to Columbus and has multiple faces, motives and most importantly identities. Identity is a definition given by oneself, one’s surroundings and/or the community that one lives in. For an immigrant, one of the hardest challenges when assimilating is finding their identity. Within The Buddha in the Attic , the reader is shown how the female identity is shaped by their picture bride experience through, dehumanization and cultural shock. At first glance, America seemed to be a land of equality and opportunity, but when the brides arrived they realized just how low they were on the totem pole. “They said our short stature made us ideally suited for work…we were the best breed of worker they had ever hired in their lives” (Otsuka, 29). These women were objectified and viewed as nothing but cheap,
