Ancient Ceramic Pottery Vs. Modern Ceramic Pottery Tess Phillips The Beginning In this poster, I will compare and contrast ancient ceramic vessels with modern ceramic vessels. By looking at the different uses and décor of each vessel I will analyze how ceramics have been used and changed over the long stretch of time. Ceramics are one of the most ancient industries as it dates back thousands of years. Once it was discovered that mixing water and clay together along with firing it created a useful object, it was the start to the entire industry. The use of ceramics had increased dramatically during the Neolithic era when communities used ceramics for farming and agriculture. Clay-based ceramics being used for food, water, and storage. Another great thing created by ceramics was the Terracotta army created between 246 – 208 BCE by the Qin Dynasty. Figure 1. This statuette is called Venus of Dolní Věstonice, which came from a small prehistoric settlement in the Czech Republic. Dated as early as 28,000 BCE, making it the oldest known ceramic artifact.
