Political Science 123 Lecture Notes September 23 rd 2019 Week 5- Chapter 5 Major Legislation of the Civil Rights Era- The 1964 Civil Rights Act- - John F. Kennedy was pushing for the civil rights act but was assassinated before it could be enacted. - the law authoresses the national government to end segregation in public education and accommodations. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (gutted in 2013) - the law authoresses the Department of Justice to suspend restrictive electoral tests in southern states that had a history of low black Americans turnout. Current civil rights debate affirmative action - Affirmative action represented a policy that requires those employers and schools that had practiced past discrimination to compensate minorities by giving them special consideration in hiring and school admissions. Current civil rights; women’s rights - equal rights for women: the right to vote - early voting oriented white feminists referred to as suffragists campaigned for the vote. - having lost out in the reconstruction amendments the women’s movement set out to blind - equal rights for women: gender equality - sex discrimination was outlawed in the 1964 civil rights act and created the equal employment opportunity
