Lux 2 Nicole Hannah-Jones is an award-winning investigative reporter who focuses on racial injustice specifically within educational systems. She uses history to bridge the understanding of racial injustice in our modern day. History tells us that our country was created on slavery which has translated into the racism that our country struggles with today. Before the founding fathers declared independence from England slavery was prevalent in the economy and continued to become the foundation of the economy. The economy was more important than the lives of people who were taken from their home. Nicole introduces her project called the 1619 project where she explains how the constitution has essentially failed the people it is supposed to protect. She provides evidence of history as well as recent events to explicitly show how this country is and has been corrupted with racism. The 1619 project is Nicole’s belief that the year 1619, when the first slaves were brought to the new world, is as important to this country as 1776. The introduction of slaves into the new world opened the triangular trade that would become the foundation of the economy. History shows that people knew that slavery was wrong, but the economy was highly dependent on slave labor that they refused to. Furthering in time to president Lincoln activating the emancipation proclamation, was the start of the fight for rights for people of color.
