FAMILY IN TRANSITION ASSIGNMENT 2 Family Structure and Demographics The couple that I interviewed are close friends of my aunt and uncle. The patient and his wife live in Mounds View, Minnesota, and are considered to be middle-class. The patient, B.B., is a 55 year-old male, married to his second wife with two sons from his previous marriage. He is a very kind, sweet man. He attended two years of vocational college and is a self-employed remodeling contractor. Both he and his wife were present for the interview. A few weeks ago B.B. woke up with some back pain, thought he tweaked it while working, and went about his day. It progressively got worse over the next few days and he decided to go to the doctor and have an assessment done. One assessment led to another and he ended up having a transesophogeal echocardiogram (TEE) done and it was seen that he had some mitral valve regurgitation along with “likely torn and flail chordae”. The diagnosis from his report is as follows: “ Final Conclusion: Myxomatous (redundant) mitral valve. Severe prolapse of the posterior mitral valve leaflet, P2 segment with likely torn and flail chordae. There is bowing of the anterior leaflet, which is thickened, but does not prolapse. This results in severe central to anterior directed mitral regurgitation. Systolic flow reversal is noted in left superior pulmonary vein”. Due to the severe mitral valve regurgitation that is occurring, B.B. will need to have open-heart surgery to repair the valve. Cultural Influence This couple has very strong faith and are Jehovah’s Witnesses. This is different than me, because I was baptized and raised in a Catholic church, however, I am not a

B.B. and his wife do follow Western medicine and follow doctor’s orders, to an extent. The biggest ethical dilemma with Jehovah’s Witnesses is their belief to never accept blood products. In an article I found the first line states, “Jehovah’s Witnesses are

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
