This is such a controversial topic and has been for decades. I believe that it is in the public’s interest to make this a separate crime. I’ve always wondered how in some cases the offender is tried for 2 homicides when the woman is pregnant, and then in some cases it’s just one charge of homicide. Why is that? This is a hard question to answer because it’s so controversial, however, in order to convince society to encourage the law to be change to convict someone of killing a pregnant woman than we first have to determine when life begins. For instance, some people believe that life begins when there is a heart beat which is around 6 weeks gestation; and others believe that life begins when the baby takes it’s first breath. I believe that life begins once the fetus has a heartbeat, therefore, it should interest the public to protect the rights of a fetus, but then we have to look at the abortion laws. Would it be fair to hand out a murder charge for a woman terminating a pregnancy? Abortions are legal and the mother’s choice, however, killing a fetus is against one’s
